Lumanai Samoa’s activities extend beyond Samoa. In Japan, we aim to provide opportunities for citizens to participate in international cooperation and cross-cultural exchange in ways that feel accessible and relevant to their everyday lives.

In addition to creating opportunities for professional exchange among dentists, dental hygienists, school teachers, and others involved in our activities in both countries, we also offer opportunities for citizens to engage with one another through cultural and values-based exchange.

Lumanai Samoa’s domestic programs (in Japan) contribute to the achievement of SDG Goal 17: “Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development,” through the following initiatives:

  • Providing opportunities for children in Japan to learn about and think critically about global issues
  • Creating opportunities for Japanese communities to learn about Samoan culture and engage in cross-cultural exchange through exhibitions and events

“Sekai to Jibun” Project

The “Sekai to Jibun” (The World and Me) Project is an educational program that provides classes and workshops for elementary, junior high, and high schools across Japan, encouraging students to think about global issues.

The program content is developed by volunteer members, including active school teachers, university students, and high school students, and is designed to be fun, easy to understand, and experiential.

Purpose:

With the concept of “Turning global issues into personal matters,” the program aims not only to help children become aware of global challenges, but also to realize how these issues are closely connected to their own local lives, environments, and daily actions.

Sample Programs:

  • A program that introduces perspectives and ways of thinking about the SDGs through lectures, helping participants understand global issues and their relevance to their own lives
  • Collaborative programs conducted alongside social studies classes or integrated learning periods, deepening students’ understanding of school subjects through real-world experiences shared by international cooperation practitioners
  • Career education programs that explore work in international cooperation through firsthand stories from NGO staff members and former JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (several of whom are members of Lumanai Samoa)
  • Online exchange programs with people in Samoa, particularly local high school and university students

Pop-up Samoa Exhibition

From December 18, 2018 to January 26, 2019, Lumanai Samoa hosted a Samoa exhibition titled
“Talofa Samoa: Discovering Life in a South Pacific Island Nation”
at Kagawa University.

Held as a special exhibition commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Kagawa University Museum, the event received support from the Takamatsu City Board of Education, JICA Shikoku, and the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers Samoa Alumni Association, among others, and was a great success. We plan to continue hosting similar exhibitions in various locations throughout Japan.
